In 2008, the Catholic Church enlisted the help of the Mormon church to mount a massive campaign for revoking equal access to the legal benefits of marriage in California. They succeeded by a small margin. (Gay marriage continues in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and it basically exists in other states by a different name, such as “civil unions.”) The following items are reactions to this taking away of constitutional rights—plus a personal note of my own.

...You are aware that I opposed [Proposition 8]. I must tell you that my heart is heavy as I think of the many faithful and loving couples who are gay or lesbian and who have again felt wounded by this vote. They do not understand how their love and desire to live in a faithful, monogamous, committed relationship and to create a family is a threat to so-called traditional marriage. I struggle along with such couples and those who support them to make some sense of this fear, but I cannot....
